Don't really mix especially if you work in Central London where you have to pay £8 for privilege of driving at 10 MPH if you're lucky then another £10 a day minimum for parking. Add to that eye watering expensive petrol by Usian standards. I'm quicker cycling or getting the train to be honest. Learned to drive only when I was 27. Have owned three cars though in the 10 odd years though.

Vauxhall Carlton (euro version of Holden Commodore)

My dad gave me this car for nothing on passing the Driving Test. 169,000 miles on the clock. Quite nice to drive, the engine was quite torquey and worked well with the autobox. Always felt like as mini cab driver though and it was a bit too big. Sold it for parts for £100.

1974 MGB Roadster

First car I paid for and was £4,500. Used to live by a dodgy MG specialist showroom so bought it from there but had absolutely no idea about classic cars. Had to spend a fortune keep it on the road due to it rusting away on my open to the elements driveway. Had more filler than metal by the end. Sold it for a grand as it didn't pass its last MOT. Lovely when it was sunny day but a pain in the arse otherwise.

Alfa Romeo 156

Bought for £11,000 having only 5,000 miles on the clock. Totally reliable in the 6 years I've owned it apart from a dodgy airbag sensor. Fast enough and cool looking, definitely keeping it for the time being. Recommend one of these motors to anyone and they're as cheap as chips due to Alfa's perceived unreliabilty.

No more rust, and better reliability, but I've heard that the service costs can be rough.

£150-200 normally from Desira Hayes which is my nearest main dealer.

a dodgy airbag sensor by wiredog (2.00 / 0) #3 Thu Jun 07, 2007 at 09:07:52 AM EST
Hopefully that isn't the sensor that tells the system you've crashed.

"Lovely when it was sunny day but a pain in the arse otherwise." describes every British Sports Car I've ever ridden in. A friend currently has a Triumph Spitfire. He keeps it in the garage unless he's 100% certain that it won't rain.

was my first car. I learned more about mechanics than about driving.

Still don't know how to drive by nebbish (4.00 / 1) #4 Thu Jun 07, 2007 at 09:59:33 AM EST
Starting to see how it could have its uses now I've begun to enjoy walking in the Dales and Lake District etc, but even inter-city travel in the UK is better by public transport IMHO.
